11/01/10 - Driving Safely In The Snow
Unless your journey is essential then it often makes sense not to travel in the first place. If you do have to venture on to the roads, proceed with extreme care and attention.
As one of the UK’s leading intensive driving schools we put a big emphasis on safe driving in all conditions, and have pulled together these useful hints and tips for driving safely in the snow.
- Skidding is the single biggest danger. Drive carefully, with smooth, gentle application of the accelerator, steering and most importantly brakes. If your vehicle does start to skid, gently lift off the accelerator and steer into the skid.
- If the road surface has not been gritted, be careful not drive in the wheel tacks of other vehicles as compressed snow is likely to be more slippery than undisturbed snow.
- Allow plenty of time for your journey and make sure you have plenty of fuel before starting off. If possible try to avoid travelling in the dark.
- Beware of black ice – It can’t be seen and is often found in areas that are shadowed from direct sunlight. Your car may be nice and cosy but it’s most likely freezing outside!
- Ensure all windows are clear of snow and properly de-iced before you set out.
- Watch your speed and remember that cyclists and pedestrians and other vehicles, will be less visible.
- Don't be afraid to turn back if you think the conditions are too treacherous.
- Keep a bottle of water and high energy food handy, such as chocolate in case you breakdown or become stranded. Warm clothing is also essential!
- Keep your mobile is fully charged and store the number of your breakdown service if you are a member.
- Finally try and carry a shovel to help you remove snow from around the wheels to give your car a chance to grip the road.
